Rajya Sabha defers triple talaq bill to next session of Parliament due to lack of consensus

New Delhi: At the time when Modi government get themselves ready to table the much argued Triple Talaq Bill in Rajya Sabha on the last day of Monsoon Session on Friday, the Congress instigated a protest against the Modi government demanding answers about the alleged scam in Rafale fighter jet deal with France. Opposition leaders comprising UPA chairperson and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi raised slogans against the government outside Parliament. She said that her party’s stand over Triple Talaq Bill is “absolutely clear” and that she won’t add anything to it.

Earlier the day, Congress looked for advise from its legal experts to tabulate its strategy on the floor of the Upper House. According to sources, the Congress leadership discussed the Triple Talaq issue with in-house senior lawyers – Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Singhvi.

Singhvi has narrated the government’s move to push the bill for clearance on the last day of Monsoon Session as just political posturing and gave sufficient hints that it won’t be easy for the government to pass the bill in Rajya Sabha test. The Congress is like enough to demand the bill to be presented in the next session or the bill to be sent to a select committee of Parliament.

In the meantime, the Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has demanded the Congress to support the amended Triple Talaq Bill saying the bill seeks justice for crores of women.

It is mentionable that this step comes a day after the Union Cabinet made three amendment to the draft bill named Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017.

The first amendment allows only a woman, or a close relative, to file a police case against her husband for instant triple talaq.  The second amendment allows her to drop the case if the husband approaches later and they arrive at a compromise. A third amendment mandates that the magistrate can resolve on releasing the husband on bail only after hearing the wife.
