Rally against rape and murder of girl

Mawkyrwat, June 13: Thousands of people including NGO leaders and students of various schools in South West Khasi Hills district today took out a massive protest rally to condemn the recent brutal rape and murder of the 18 year-old girl from Mawsaw village, 30 Kms from Mawkyrwat.
The rally was organised by the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong (SRS) Mawthawpdah Area, SRS Mawsaw Area, SRS Rangblang Area and SRS Mawiong Pawphlang together with NGOs including the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and the Rilang People Development Council (RPDC).
From Mawthawpdah area, the march started from Mawthawpdah village while from Rangblang and Mawiong-Diwian area, it was started from Laitjynrai junction and both culmited at Mawsynrang market in Mawsaw. During the march, people holding banners and black flags shouted slogans demanding strict punishment to the accused.
Speaking on the occasion, M Kharkongor of Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights condemned the incident and promised to take up the issue with the Superintendent of Police, South West Khasi Hills so that the accused can be punished as per law.
Meanwhile, president of Rilang People Development Council (RPDC), Commander Shangpliang said that crime against women such as rape and murder has increased because most of the cases are pending in the court.
“If the culprits can be convicted immediately, I think rape cases and other kinds of crime against women will be reduced,” he said.
