‘Rampant Dental Diseases Common Among Arunachalees’: Dr Joram Nisha

Itanagar: About 60 to 80 per cent of the thinly-populated Arunachal Pradesh population suffers from rampant dental diseases for lack of awareness, said Arunachal Pradesh State Dental Council (APSDC) registrar Dr Joram Nisha. Dr Nisha, also deputy director health service said that the APSDC has decided to conduct dental awareness programme in schools across the State to bring mass awareness, particularly among children of six to eight years of age on basic dental care to reduce the alarming dental problem. Moreover, gum or periodontal diseases are equally common among 10 to 15 per cent population of the state for bad oral behaviour that too due to ignorance, he said.

The APSDC is the last council to be formed on June 28 last year among seven councils in the State. Others are Arunachal Pradesh Medical Council, Arunachal Pradesh Homoeopathic Council, Arunachal Pradesh Indian Medicine Council; Arunachal Pradesh Nursing Council, Arunachal Pradesh Pharmacy Council and Arunachal Pradesh branch of Clinical Establishment Council with special roles by each council. All qualifying bachelor in dental surgery (BDS) have to be registered with the APSDC and so far 308 with BDS degree have been registered, he added.
