Rasaraj’s statue unveiled in Sivasagar

JOYSAGAR, Feb 7: On the eve of the Axam Xahitya Xabha’s Sivasagar special centery session, the prestigious Bezbarua Bansha Sadan on Tuesday dedicated a five-foot high full statue of Lakshmith Bezbarua, the pioneer of modern Assamese literature, to the people of Assam.

A formal iugural meeting was held at Lakshmith Bezbarua Sishu Uddan in Sivasagar town. The meeting was presided over by eminent citizen and president of the Bezbarua Bansha Sadan, Dilip Bezbaruah. Uttar Kamalabari Xatradhikar Sri Sri Jarddan Dev Goswami formally lit the earthen lamp and unveiled the statue. Litterateur and former president of AXX, Dr. gen Saikia attended the meeting as chief guest and in his speech he stated the a lot of work had been done by Rasaraj 150 years ago and for such works today Assamese language has its own identity.  Lakshmith Bezbarua had for the first time exposed the world to the greatness of Srimanta Shankardev, said Dr. Saikia.

Ujjanial Xatradhikar Sri Sri Laxmikanta Mahanta, former president of Asom Kabi Sanmilan, Prem Gogoi, former Principal of Sibsagar College and treasurer of AXX’s reception committee, Prakash Kotoky and chairperson of Sivasagar Municipal Board, Mridusmita Sinha also spoke on the occasion.

The statue has been built by Bezbarua Bansha Sadan at a cost of about Rs 5 lakh, said the Sadan’s president.
