AGARTALA: Mizoram officials have completed identification of the Reang refugees residing in the three camps within Panisagar subdivision of North Tripura district amid growing interest among the camp inmates to go back to their ancestral home in the neighboring State. The three camps where identification was completed are Kasko, Hamcha Para and Khakchand.

Identification processes in three other camps -- Naisingh Para, Ashapara and Hezapara under Kanchanpur subdivision will begin from Monday and will continue till July 20.

Though identification of the Reang refugees was undertaken in 2016 yet some were left out while some were born in the camps after that. The ongoing identification process becomes necessary to enroll their names as the Union Home Ministry has fixed the last date for completion of their repatriation on September 30.

Dr Saithanpuia and Benzamin Ralthe, Deputy Commissioner of Mamith district of Mizoram who are supervising the identification process said a total of 6,462 people from 1,006 families were identified in this phase. Both of them said most of the refugees have expressed willingness to go back to their ancestral home in Mizoram.

The identification process was started after a meeting of joint monitoring committee comprising representatives of the Union Home Ministry (MHA), the Governments of Mizoram and Tripura and the refugees at Delhi on June 30. In the meeting, the MHA made it clear that the repatriation process must be completed by September 30 and also that distribution of all relief in the camps will be stopped after that.

Earlier on several occasions, the refugees had rejected the Government's decision and frustrated the repatriation process. But after the Central government took a strong decision, the refugee leaders seem to be relenting; and according to report the the camp inmates are in favour of repatriation.
