Relics at Patgaon seek attention!

AZARA, June 11: The cry for the preservation of the rare relics found at Patgaon in the Rani area in Kamrup district continues to fall on the deaf ear of the State Archeological Department, posing a threat to their existence.

Various parties, organizations and conscious citizens of the area have all along been demanding of the State Government to preserve the relics and development the spot as a tourist destition.

Patgoan was the capital of Rani State. The site is still full of ancient relics that have much archeological and historic value. Some of the important relics that are still found at the spot are Court of Rani King, ginighat where crimils were executed, the king’s bathroom, the kings prayer hall, a stone bridge, an elephant-pulled cart of the king, Buri Gossaini Temple, the pond meant for washing the lentil used as prasad, etc. The excel of the elephant-pulled cart of the King is on display at the State Museum in Guwahati. However, the rest of the relics have been lying uttended. If they are allowed to remain uttended for long at the glare of the weather, they would soon get mixed with the five subtle elements of matter.

The local people and organizations have renewed their appeal to the Department of Archeology in the State to take the site into its custody and take measures to  preserve the relics and develop the site as a tourist destition.

With the change of guards at Dispur, the expectations of the people from the new BJP-led government in the State is very high. Will Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal and his Cabinet take the issue with the right earnestness and rise to the occasion?
