Report on Cases of Rape, Dowry Shows Gloomy Picture of BJP Rule in Assam Since 2016

Guwahati: A recent and official crime report on cases of women related violence has revealed a very gloomy picture of the state of law and order in Assam as far as the last two years of BJP coming into power in the state.

As per the report, a whopping 4,130 cases of rape has been reported, and over 15,000 dowry-related violence, ever since the BJP-led government came to power in the state two years ago.

Experts are of the view that such rising figures of crimes of sexuality and violence against women could be assessed as an embarrassment to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government since it came to power in 2016 while assuring the protection of lives and property of the people.

During the state assembly session, Assam Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that a total of 4,130 cases of rape have been reported from across the state in the last two years, a total of 15,470 cases related to dowry have been reported during the period.

It may be mentioned that the statement was made by Minister Patowary while replying to a question by AGP legislator, Ramendra Narayan Kalita.

He was replying on behalf of state Home Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, also Chief Minister of Assam.

Speaking before the house, Patowary said, "Besides, 15,741 cases of abduction, 32,248 cases of burglary and 2,438 cases of killing were reported (between 2014 and 2016)."

He further said that another 21 deaths related to superstition and witch-hunting have also taken place from 2016 till now.

Reiterating the details of terror related attacks and casualties in state, he said that "A total of 56 terrorists belonging to different rebel organisations have been killed by security forces followed by the death of seven security personnel and injury to 14 of them due to terrorist attacks during this period."
