Silchar: The hope for the revival of the Cachar and Nagaon paper mills of Hindustan Paper Corporation has brightened after the meeting of the trade union leaders with Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal at Dispur in Guwahati on Wednesday. The Chief Minister has indicated he will take up the matter with the Prime Minister of India and impress on him to explore the possibility of reopening the mills. The meeting assumes significance in the light of the order dated May 29, 2019 of the NCLAT (National Company Law Tribunal) which has directed the Government of India not to liquidate the mills but to take effective steps to put them on steam.

The order of NCLAT also asks the Union Government to release all pending salaries and statutory dues to the employees who have been put in extreme financial distress. Besides narrating the mental and physical distressed condition of the employees and their families before the Chief Minister, the union leaders informed him of 55 deaths till date due to economic hardship. They have at the same time urged upon the Chief Minister to see that the Centre does not go for disinvestment or privatization as it will spell doom like the Ashok Paper Mill at Jogighopa.

The leaders who met the Chief Minister under the banner of Citizens’ Forum included Ananda Bordoloi, general secretary, INTUC, Nagaon paper mill, Manobendra Charaborty, president, INTUC, Cachar paper mill, and conveners, Anup Chetia, Dilip Patgiri, Lachit Bordoloi and Monoranjan Bora, expressed the hope that both the mills would be revived to boost up the industrialization of the State and economy and all the employees, direct and indirect, get a new lease of life for their survival. It is also significant that all the BJP MPs have made a joint move for the resuscitation of the mills.
