Rift in Tripura’s BJP-IPFT govt, BJP's tribal wing seeks ending ties with IPFT

Janajati Morcha, the ruling BJP's tribal wing in Tripura, by indicating the growing rift between the coalition partners, on Thursday demanded immediate severing of ties with the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT).

According to Sanjoy Debbarma, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state Janajati Morcha president the IPFT was creating "chaos" across the state over various issues.

The BJP and IPFT had jointly secured 44 seats in the 60 member state assembly elections in March this year and thus formed the government by ousting 25 years of Left Front rule in the state.

BJP was able to secure 36 seats alone in the election and gained single majority in the state Legislative Assembly.

IPFT, gained 8 seats and the party was later allotted two berths in the state cabinet.

As reported by the PTI Debbarma said that development works of the state government have been hit because of their activities and they demanded Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb to remove them from the ministry and severe all ties with them.

He quoted CM Biplab Deb who said that the agreement with IPFT was finalised by BJP's central leadership and they would be consulted concerning the demand.

BJP state vice-president and Janajati Morcha leader Rampada Jamatia charged IPFT supporters for attacking his house at Killa yesterday. As stated by him many other leaders comprising MLA of Golaghati constituency – Birchandra Debbarma were also attacked by IPFT supporters.

He said, “MLA Birchandra Debbarma lodged an FIR with the police. IPFT supporters have held attacks on his family to force him to withdraw the FIR. They are also involved in criminal offenses in different parts of the state. We have demanded that legal action be taken against them and the alliance with IPFT be severed immediately,”

The clash between the BJP and its regional partner IPFT erupted before the panchayat by-polls, with a series of clashes reported between the workers of the ruling allies over submission of nominations. The by-polls will be held on September 30.
