Rita Lily Anthony: A tribute

Rita Lily Anthony, a resident of Birubari, Guwahati, passed away at Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the age of 85. Born in 1933 to LGA Dawson, she married Edward Anthony at St. Joseph’s Church, Guwahati in 1952. She was one of the oldest nursing staff of Assam who was endowed with the sobriquets ‘Little Sister’ & ‘Anthony Sister’.

 A trained staff nurse from Ganesh Das Hospital Shillong (1951), Rita Lily Anthony, worked in the Assam Medical College Hospital, followed by Hansara TE, and was transferred on promotion to Besokopi Central Hospital, Doomdooma. Later she was appointed by the LGBTB Hospital in the year 1959 and served there till 1977. Thereafter, she was transferred to GMCH and worked as an Assistant Matron in the Infectious Disease Hospital (Cholera Hospital), Birubari and served there till her Superannuation Retirement (1991). Her retirement didn’t deter her benevolent spirit; thereafter she worked in several other hospitals including Wintrobe Hospital, Kalicharan nursing home, and then lastly she served Down Town Hospital. She will be remembered for her strong work ethics, undaunting spirit, hardworking persolity and generosity for the needy and the under-privileged. She is survived by her three sons Lawrence, Richard, James; daughter, Mary Joseph; daughters-in-law: Rita, Usha, Anita; son-in-law, Walter; grandchildren, grandsons-in-law and a host of relatives and well wishers.

Today (April 2), on the 40th day of her demise, we are gathering together at her residence to celebrate her life & pray for her departed soul.
