Road mishap claims two lives, six injured

DIGBOI, April 20: In a tragic road mishap on Monday morning on NH 38  near Ultapool under Digboi Police Station, two persons died and six were injured after a Digboi-bound Maruti van (AS 23 D 6082) hit a tree and fell into a ditch.

The deceased have been identified as Sajan Debth (30) of Milan gar and Abhijit Debth (25) of Masterpara while the injured persons are Radhu Debth (30) of Andapara, Hira Phukon (36), jourlist and  a member of Digboi Press Club, Dipankar Debth (29), Shibu Kalibari, Habul Dey (23) of Andapara and Miaz Ali (26) of Masterpara who was  driving the vehicle.

According to Hira Phukon, who sustained multiple fracture and had a rrow escape, they were returning home from Tinsukia when blocks of huge boulders appeared on the Highway and while trying to steer the vehicle, it lost control and subsequently hit a nearby tree.

Meanwhile, the inhuman part of the tragic incident was the robbery of money, gold orments and bank debit cards of the injured people by a group of unidentified miscreants.

However, based on available input and stern instructions of the SP Tinsukia, Digboi Police has apprehended around eight youths of the area in this regard. Certain looted documents along with debit cards were also returned to the police by local VDPs.

People are wondering who laid the blocks of boulders, perhaps with the intention of robbery. SP Tinsukia, And Prakash Tiwari has assured to investigate the incident and apprehend the culprits.  

The injured are being treated at various hospitals and the last rites of the deceased were carried out at Itavata cremation ground.
