Rohini Kumar Bania: A tribute

Though the death is inevitable yet it is very difficult to receive the news of some deaths. Some particular persons with their dedicated life and works with integration to the society and service to the tion have left a deep impression in the common minds which is very hard to forget. In the police department, very few officials with great persolity and service have been able to won the hearts and minds of the people they served. The selfless service, devoted works help such persons to be remembered by even the common men after their demise. Former Deputy Inspector General of Police Rohini Kumar Bania is one of the persolity in whom the common men could find a guardian, a mentor or a well-wisher.

With his ussuming height with a healthy body and mind and a very handsome appearance, late Bania left the image of a ‘true cop’ in the society.

Born in the family of village farmer Soneswar Bania and Someswari Bania on June 20, 1946 at Dagaon in Dhalpur area of Lakhimpur district, late Bania completed his school education from Dhalpur High School and after completion of the Pre- University classes from Darrang College in Tezpur, he completed his BSc from Cotton College in 1968.

His ardent desire to pursue higher education despite his poor and rural background led him to shine in the Guwahati University to complete his MSc in Economics. Immediately after obtaining the Masters degree, he joined the tiol Sample Survey in Shillong and rendered his service in Midpore district in West Bengal for a short period.

But as the destiny has already decided his future, he was qualified for Assam Police Service (APS) and joined Assam Police as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). He retired as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (MPC) in 2008.

We came into the close contact with this ‘Friendly Cop’ during the critical days of Assam Agitation in 1983 and since then we were fortute enough to find an ‘elder brother’ in him which we enjoyed till his last days.

Late Bania was always clear in his words and thoughts with a very simple life style with his involvement in community development activities.

Today he is no more. This ‘people friendly Cop’ has left for the heavenly abode on November 17.

On this auspicious day of ‘Adya Shraddha’, we pray before the Almighty for his eterl peace.
