Rongali Bihu celebrated in Hailakandi

Hailakandi, May 8: The 4th Rongali Bihu Sanmilan was celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety at Nazrul Sadan in Hailakandi town on Sunday. Held under the auspices of Hailakandi Bihu Organising Committee 2018, the function began with the hoisting of the Bihu flag by Additional Superintendent of Police and president of the committee, Jagdish Das in the morning. The smriti tarpan, the lighting of the traditional lamp, was done by District Transport Officer and working president of the committee, Nripen Kalita. Traditional and indigenous sports such as tug-of-war, musical chair, tekeli bhonga were organised on the occasion. Painting and sports competitions were held amongst students in two categories from Class V to VII and from Class VIII to X.

The cultural programme held in the evening drew a good crowd with old and youth alike making to the venue. Local and guest artistes regaled the audience with popular Bihu songs. The main star of the evening was Mrinal Chutia, a popular singer from Silchar. Chutia belted a number of Bihu hit numbers to the delight of the audience.  Assamese cuisine like pitha, chira-doi-gur were served at a community feast at a namghar in the evening.
