Row over Citizenship Amendment Bill: SMSS & AAMSU staged road blockade in Golaghat

Sarupathar: The Satra Mukti Sangram Samitee (SMSS) and the All Assam Minority Student's Union (AAMSU) including various organization at Sarupathar in Dhansiri Subdivision under Golaghat district staged a road blockade today for at least one hour.

The demonstrators also burnt tyres on road and demanded immediate withdrawal of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Almost 500 protesters shouted slogans against the controversial Citizenship Bill and against the BJP Government.

Speaking to the media, Akash Daw, SMSS, General Secretary of Dhansiri Subdivision regional unit warned the BJP government of a State-wide agitation involving every section of society, if the government fails to scrap the highly controversial Citizenship Bill.

Daw also added, "The centre should specifically adhere to the clauses of the Assam Accord signed in 1985. Anyone who has entered Assam after March 24, 1971, should be treated as an illegal migrant irrespective of one's religious affiliation. There should be no tinkering with the Assam Accord. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 should be scrapped since it is a threat to the culture, language and identity of Assamese people".

Meanwhile, Daw also threatened Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and the BJP government of Assam that if the Citizenship Bill is passed then the Assam will burn into ash.

Later the police team came to the spot and managed to control the situation and cleared the traffic jam in the heart of the Sarupathar town under Dhansiri Subdivision in Golaghat district.
