DHUBRI, Feb 21: After 12 days, safai karmacharis under the Dhubri Municipal Board called off their strike and joined duty from Wednesday. Safai karmacharis were on strike to extend support to the Dhubri Municipal Employees’ Union who are on strike for indefinite period since February 8. But on February 16, the situation turned grim and tense when safai karmacharis of Dhubri Municipal Board attacked members of Lions Club and Leo Club while the organizations were cleaning the heaps of garbage that had piled up since the launch of the indefinite strike by the Dhubri Municipal Employees’ Union.

However, Dhubri district administration later provided security cover to Lions Club and Leo Club members in their cleaning drive in the town.

In view of the failure by the board to keep the town clean, a project titled ‘Clean Dhubri Clean Dhubri’, was submitted recently to the Executive Officer of Dhubri Municipal Board, Jintu Bora, who at the instance of the Deputy Commissioner, Ant Lal Gyani, is taking keen interest in  all-round development, including cleaning of Dhubri town area. The project was prepared by a social media group on Whatsapp.

When contacted by The Sentinel, Executive Officer of Dhubri Municipal Board, Jintu Bora said that they were serious about the ‘Clean Dhubri Green Dhubri’ project and soon the board would take fil decision for its implementation. “It is one of the most important things among others to keep the town clean. We are serious this time because enough water has flown under the bridge by the time. We are thinking of implementing the project in a phased manner. We may even first go for pilot project in some wards and then extend to other wards,” Bora added.  The project ‘Clean Dhubri Green Dhubri’ states that solid waste magement is not a difficult thing to do, provided there is well planned and well defined directions, backed by manpower to carry works.

At present, Dhubri generates 17 to 20 trucks solid waste daily from nearly 16,000 establishments, including 8,500 residences, under the Dhubri municipal board, it states. In its introduction, the project states that Dhubri being a historical important town in the State, a joint effort should be made to keep the town clean. Dhubri is a historical town which came into to being much earlier than the Dhubri Town Committee which was formed in 1883. Existence and history of Dhubri traces back to the period of the 16th century as evidences of ruins of fort built by Raja Parikshit, son of Raghurai, are still found scattered in the town while Dhubri Gurudwara Sri Teg Bahdur Sahib Ji is the living evidence of history founded by him in 1666.
