Safe drinking water demanded before KAAC Election

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

HAMREN, April 28: Drinking water crisis in both the hill districts of Karbi Anglong is not a new phenomenon. However, the failure of local leaders, concerned authority and the government in solving the problems is making the lives of the people even harder. Charchim area under Amreng MAC constituency is one of the many areas where people don’t have access to clean drinking water.

The area though located along the road connecting Jirikindeng-Kheroni and other parts of areas with the district main headquarter, is one of the most backward area. The women folk of the area had to walk for about 5 kilometres to fetch muddy water for drinking and cooking purpose. The people of the area had to pay huge sum of money to buy drinking water from Kheroni.

Moreover, crores of rupees have been sanctioned for the development of this backward constituency, yet the area and the people remained utterly neglected. The KAAC, which is the guardian of its people have not taken up any developmental works to ameliorate the most basic need of the people in the area. The leaders on the contrary, continue making false promises to innocent rural folks when election is round the corner.

The continued negligence of MP, MLA and successive CEM, EM and MAC is responsible for plight of the people of Charchim area who are forced to drink dirty, untreated water affecting their health.

The people of the area are now demanding safe drinking water from leaders and concerned authority before the KAAC election. It may be mentioned that the entire Charchim village was burnt down and several people were also butchered and killed during the 2005 violence and in spite of the immense loss of lives and properties, the victims and affected villagers did not receive any help or compensation from the State Government nor KAAC authority.
