Sale of banned substances, illicit liquor causes concern in Lakhimpur

By our Staff Reporter

Lakhimpur, October 19: Sale of drugs and homemade alcohol has always been banned from the societies of Assam as they were termed illegal by law and customs and the same implies in North Lakhimpur district.

In spite of a strict ban on drugs and illegal alcohol, a black market of drugs and illegal homemade alcohol has been flourishing under the nose of the Excise Department and district adminstration of North Lakhimpur. The areas like Khelmati (near the Shiv Mandir), Bantow, Rongadandi, kari, CD road and other remote areas are the dens for sale of banned substances like canbis,  Nitroglycerin tablets locally known as Nitro and homemade alcohol known as Sai-Mod. Other than Sai-Mod, the drug peddlers bring in drugs from various parts of Assam and canbis is mostly brought from Guwahati and Shillong, said sources.

On the other hand, Sai-Mod, the local made alcohol, is cooked within the district and secretly sold in the district.

“Canbis and Nitroglycerin tablets have ruined the lives of many young college students. Often youths are seen taking canbis  in the open environment in a government school opposite  the Lakhimpur Eye Hospital. The Khelmati Police Outpost is at a stone’s throw distance from the government school and the police officials can clearly see the activities of those youths. If the police officials want, they can easily take the drug peddler into custody who lives near the outpost and also arrest the drug addicts. But the police officials take bribe from these addicts and the drug peddler. The district administration must suspend the corrupt police officials.  Many drug peddlers come out on bail and they start the same business again,” said a local resident.

Local people have alleged that the drug addicts often indulge in anti-social activities like eve-teasing under the influence of drugs. A police official said that all the drug peddlers had been arrested before and later they came out on bail. “The drug peddlers deserve severe punishment as they tend to do the same business again. Therefore, we have been warning the youths to stay away from drugs and have been organizing substance abuse awareness camps time-to-time to educate the people about the harmful effect of drug abuse,” he said.
