Sale of powerloom products prohibited in Tinsukia district

TINSUKIA, October 29: The Superintendent of Handloom and Textiles, Tinsukia, by an order prohibited sale of power loom products in Tinsukia district under Handlooms (Reservation of Articles for Production) Act, 1985 with immediate effect. The order stated that the ban had been imposed on all power loom products like phulam gamocha, silk, muga chador, mekhela and any violation would earn punitive action under Section10 of the Act, stated in a DIPR Tinsukia press release. The release further stated that, the traders selling these products, particularly of muga and silk, must issue proper receipt wherein it must be certified as ‘Origil Muga Silk of Assam/Eri Silk of Assam or Silk of Varasi/Mysore’. To avoid doubts and confusion among buyers, the retailers of silk products have been asked to put up separate display and prominent labeling of all products, else they will be barred from selling power loom articles, the release added.
