GUWAHATI, Mar 1: The Sadou Asom Mukti Jujaru Sanmilan (SAMJS) has demanded an investigation to identify the culprits who broke the main gate of the programme meant for paying tribute to the Patharughat martyrs.

Speaking to the press at Dispur Press Club today, SAMJS president Jatin Goswami said: “It was for the first time since independence that an organization tried to pay tribute to the martyrs of the state through a public programme at Barhampur of gaon district. The Asom Ga Parishad Barhampur Ancholic Samiti (AGPBAS) organized the programme to pay tribute to 32 martyrs of Patharughat movement, including four from the Barhampur area. The organizers also erected a gate in the honour of the martyrs. The gate had the mes of the martyrs written on it. However, some miscreants destroyed the gate and the statues of elephant on the night of February 28. We condemn the incident and demand an investigation to identify and punish the culprits.” SAMJS general secretary Dijendra Mohan Sarma said: “We’re not with any political party, but we will continue to support any organization that will honour the martyrs of the state. The organizers have filed an FIR in gaon police station, and if no any action is taken within 15 days, we will resort to a statewide protest.”
