Sanbor Shullai slams Urban Affairs department on MUDA bye-laws

FROM OUR STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Aug 6: Shillong South legislator Sanbor Shullai on Thursday slammed the Urban Affairs department for its alleged ignorance in terms of applying the Meghalya urban Development Authority (MUDA) bye-laws in the master plan areas.

A day after the Additiol Secretary (in-charge Urban) Prashant ik stated, “Building Byelaws cover to all master plan areas” , Shullai said, “It seems Mr. ik has not read The Meghalaya Town & Country Planning Act, 1973 properly and therefore is not aware of Section 1 of The Meghalaya Town & Country which states it shall extend to the whole of Meghalaya excluding the autonomous district, provided that if any District Council desires that all or any of the provisions of this Act should apply to the autonomous district concerned, a notification may be issued to that effect and this Act shall then extend to that autonomous district subject to such exception or modification as may be specified in the notification.”

The NCP legislator said, “ik has been trying to confuse the public and his statement is contrary to the law which is very clear that until and unless the District Council notifies its intention of including its area, The Meghalaya Town & Country Planning Act, 1973 shall not be applicable.”

Shullai further said that the CEM of the KHADC should call an all party meeting and meet the Government and clarify the matter and decide once and for all the encroachment of MUDA into the Sixth Schedule Area.
