Sangram Committee stages protest in Silchar

Silchar, July 5: Members and conveners of garikatwa Suraksha Sangram Committee, Cachar-Karimganj-Hailakandi have demanded immediate cancellation of transferring women detainees of detention camp of the Central Jail of Silchar to Kokrajhar. In this regard, they staged a protest-demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar on Wednesday. They stated that Prime Minister had promised that he would dissolve detention camps within 100 days of his coming to power. Days, weeks, months and years have passed by but nothing has been done in this regard. In addition to this, the decision to deport women detainees has come as a bolt from the blue. garikatwa Suraksha Sangram Committee has also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam through the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, urging upon to cancel the deportation order.

 They have pointed out in the memorandum that the condition of the inmates of the camp is very pitiable and pathetic. There is lack of good food, health and hygienic conditions are also very deplorable and above all inhuman treatment is often meted out to them. It has been also stated that the Foreigners’ Tribul has wrongly labelled tural citizens of the country as foreigners and ‘D’- voters which is creating difficulties for these people. It has been clearly written in the memorandum, signed by Shashank Shekar Paul, Pradip Kumar Deb, Arugshu Bhattacharjee, Neqib Hussain Choudhury, Prabash Sarkar among others, if something is not done in this regard, a series of agitations would follow.
