Silchar, Nov 6: Campaigners of ‘Sathi Hatao’ has received a major setback as Gauhati High Court has directed that no confidence motion can be brought for the next six months and Sathi Karmakar would remain as the president of Cachar Zila Parishad. The fil curtain on the issue has been drawn. A notice was also issued by the protesters on October 21 that a meeting would be held on November 7. However, it has been cancelled now. Sathi Karmakar wrote a writ petition and made an appeal to the High Court to cancel the meeting and on Saturday, the High Court made the decision to cancel the meeting. Sathi Karmakar’s supporters and members of Congress are in the seventh heaven as her protesters have received a jolt.

The High Court has stated a meeting for holding no confidence motion against the petitioner, Sathi Karmakar, was held on July 19, this year, where out of 27 members, which constitutes Cachar Zila Parishad, only 7 members had turned up and in order to carry home a no confidence motion, it needs to be supported by 18 members. Moreover, no confidence motion can be brought within six months. It should be mentioned here that no confidence motion that was brought against the Cachar Zila Parishad president Sathi Karmakar was postponed as some requisite members in the meeting of the Parishad on October 20 was absent.

Presiding over the meeting, Saleha Begam Laskar, vice president read out the Assam Panchayat Raj Act 1995 and thus could postpone the meeting and it was announced that in order to resolve the issue, the next meeting would be held on November 7.

Mention should be made here that in order to prove the no trust motion against BJP and president Sathi Karmakar, out of the total 27 members in the Zila Parishad, a quorum of 18 members was mandatory. Both Congress and AIUDF eagerly waited for Troyobasi Das, who is an Independent Zila Parishad member from Katigorah. However, the wait was in vain, as Troyobasi Das did not attend the meeting. He was also a suspended member of the Saffron party.
