Scholar bats for inclusion of freedom fighters in textbooks

SHILLONG, June 29: Scholar A Choudary has expressed surprised that the people of Meghalaya has forgotten about the ingenious Khasi fighters who joined the Indian tiol Army (I) during the freedom struggle of the country. “I’m surprised that such brave people were virtually ignored by the people of Meghalaya and I’m further surprised that other fighters from Northeast particularly were virtually ignored in our history and textbooks,” Choudary told reporters on Thursday.
He informed that in Meghalaya there were a number of brave Khasi soldier who had joined the Indian tiol Army (I) along with their compatriots from Assam, Mizoram, galand and Manipur. ming a few brave souls who joined the I from Meghalaya, he informed that from Meghalaya there was Havildar Stoverwell Thangkhiew, Sub officer P Khongwar, Sub officer S Lorot Sing Nongtraw among others. In this connection, Choudary said, “It is high time we rectify the chapter dealing with the last phase of India’s freedom struggle. Many facts are actually coming out now and it is time for our new generation of researchers to take up research of fighters from the entire North East including Meghalaya.”
