'Science and technology, tools to solve problems'

Dispur, July 20: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said science and technology should be extensively used to solve problems like climate change, energy deficiency, flood etc and universities should act as force-multiplier in using science and technology for solving these problems.

Speaking at the iugural function of the permanent campus of Assam Science and Technology University at Jalukbari yesterday, Chief Minister Gogoi said education system needs to be made more responsive and should proactively suggests solution to the local problems. Emphasising on the need of strong fundamentals for a good and responsive education system, Gogoi said, “It has been one of the priorities of the present State Government to make a pyramid-like system of education, responsive of contemporary problems and a catalyst for propelling development.”

He moreover said looking into the dymic character of the society there has been a constant need for upgrading the curriculum and it has been the endeavour of the State Government to design a flexible curriculum which promotes innovation and creativity. In sync with this endeavour, Assam Science and Technology University was established in 2010 to give an impetus to the application of science and technology for stimulating growth and development. He moreover, said Assam Science and Technology University should take a lead in applying science and technology for solving problems and propel growth of the society. He also said that the State Government has been working persistently in developing and implementing world class Washington Accord accredited programme to improve the level of technology, education and research in Assam. Assam Science and Technology University has an important role to play in this direction to create a pool of human resources and raise the standard of living by uniting different segments of the society in the me of education.  The permanent campus of the university is located at a sprawling 10 bighas of land at Jalukbari to provide for instruction and research through its constituent and affiliated colleges and institutions.

Additiol Chief Secretary, Education Rajib Bora, Principal Secretary, Education Paban Kumar Borthakur, Vice Chancellor of the University Prof PK Goswami along with other dignitaries were present on the occasion, a press release said.
