Science enthusiasts participate in march for science

Silchar, April 17: A mass rally, ‘India March for Science’, Silchar chapter, a movement by the scientific community of the country to defend science and develop scientific temperament, human values and the spirit of inquiry among the citizens of India, and to stop the propagation of unscientific ideas and superstitious beliefs, was taken out from Netaji Statue point at Ranigrkhari of Silchar recently. The rally moved through the streets of the town before converging before Goldighi Municipal Mall. The theme of the rally is to intersect science and education. It is an attempt to focus on the power of science and scientific training to empower young minds.

One of the most important aims of ‘March for Science’ is to make officials, politicians and authorities concerned answerable in terms of being able to respect science. Some of the demands are allocation of at least 3% GDP to scientific and technological research and 10% towards education, stopping propagation of unscientific, obscurantist ideas, religious intolerance and developing scientific temperament and spirit of inquiry as enshrined in Article 51A of the Constitution of India, ensuring dissemination of ideas which are backed by scientific evidence and enacting policies based on evidence-based science.
