our correspondent

Itagar, Oct 1: Immediate Downstream Affected Peoples’ Forum (IDAPF) of the East Kameng district headed by its Chairman Lota Singhi, along with the forums delegates on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to state Chief Secretary for scrapping and immediate stopping of further activities on the proposed Phanchung hydro-electric project over the Pachi River. IDAPF strongly opposing the setting of two dams within the distance of just one kilometer had earlier submitted a memorandum for scrapping off the said dam in the public hearing which was held on April last. The forum in the memorandum apprised the Chief Secretary that a proposed prelimiry survey of land acquisition initiated by the district administration is also highly condemned by them and termed it as disrespect of public sentiments or fails to understand public emotion. It further added that the forum will continue their fight against the construction of the two dams in the area and will launch widespread democratic movement if the demand is not met. Meanwhile, 10th Seppa Block Panchayat Chairperson Tara Singhi has appealed the Hydro Commissioner Kaling Tayeng for immediate intervention in the matter and has demanded for immediate scrapping of the Phanchung hydro power. He also briefed the sentiments of public within its jurisdiction to which Tayeng assured to extend possible help in the movement while the Chief Engineer Sang Phuntsok has also to help. IDAPF has further appealed the local MLA Tapuk Taku for cooperation after which the latter met the chief secretary and discussed regarding the issue.
