Scribes stage protest in gaon

GAON, August 17: The jourlists of gaon and Hojai districts on Monday staged a protest against the allege assault on media persons by Congress members at the office of the Hojai sub-divisiol officer when the media persons were assembled there to cover the news of Independence Day celebration.

The Congress members allegedly assaulted the media persons in front of the Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Rockybul Hussain, sub-divisiol officer Kaveri Barkakati Sarma and Hojai SP Kankan Jyoti Saikia when they were interacting with the media persons. It was alleged that the officers including the minister remained mute spectators when the Congress workers attacked the media persons.

The jourlists, including office bearers of various organizations, on Monday staged a protest before the Deputy Commissioner’s office, gaon and condemned the alleged assault. They slammed minister Rockybul Hussain and other officers for not taking action against the accused Congress workers. The protestors demanded immediate resigtion of the minister and suspension of the officers in front of whom the incident took place.

Addressing the scribes assembled in the protest, senior jourlist Dr. Abu Hanifa said that jourlists were often targeted by political workers and corrupt officers. They had to face such incidents unitedly and courageously, he added.

 The agitators were supposed submit a memorandum to the Governor through the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of gaon but the DC refused to accept it and  sent her junior officers to interact with the scribes. Thereafter, the scribes took to the streets to protest her move and filly decided to avoid all the programmes of the district administration for an indefinite period.
