Section of Tripura Muslims oppose ban on triple talaq

From A Correspondent

Agartala, Nov 10: Various Islamic organisations in Tripura came together to prevent the ongoing move to ban tripal talaq in which they are seeing an attempt to enforce unified civil code in the country and considered it to be a threat to Shariah laws. They have already launched a campaign ‘Save Shariat’ and organised a public meeting in the field of Kadamtala Higher Secondary School in Dharmagar under North Tripura District and said they will not accept any interference with Shariah laws approved by Quran.

Though most of the Muslim intellectuals refrained from participating in the movement the Mullahs and Muftis from across the state were present to address the meeting attended by few hundreds. Sayad Ahamed Saheb of Kailasahar, a member of the All India Muslim Law Board and the Tripura State Emarate Sahyarisaha and Nodwatul Tathi president Maula Muhammad Abdullaha were the main speaker in the meeting.

Both of them vehemently opposed the move by the Central government to ban triple talaq and denied the allegation of gender inequality. Maula said rather triple talaq ensures security of the women’

‘There is no case of suicide or killing of wives in Muslim society. If there is any dispute among the husband and wife triple talaq is the only solution’, he said adding Quran has approved it. He also quoted from interpretation of Quran by Girish Chandra Sen to prove his point. The meeting also passed a resolution that contains four demands including withdrawal of affidavit submitted by the Central government to ban tripal talaq. They will submit the resolution before the All India Muslim Persol Law Board during its next meeting.
