Secure rights of indigenous people before Lok Sabha polls: PVM to Delhi & Dispur

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The convenor of Prabajan Virodhi Manch (PVM), Upamanyu Hazarika, on Thursday came down heavily on the BJP-led coalition Central and State Governments saying that both have failed to deliver on their promises rendered to the masses during their pre-poll campaigns. Hazarika said, “The Government should secure the rights of the indigenous people of Assam before the Lok Sabha (LS) polls.”

Addressing a press meet, the PVM leader along with other members of the organization all in black coloured dresses further called for “the passing of a legislation reserving land for the indigenous people, as well as ensuring government employment and trade licences for them based on the NRC (National Register of Citizens) of 1951.” “The State Government does not pay any heed to the voices of the public but fears the black colour,” he said.

Hazarika further demanded “reverification of the NRC and opposition of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, and any such instrument thrusting immigrants upon Assam.”

Stating that “there is no ground to seek Centre’s involvement to bring about an Act for the reservation of land for the indigenous people especially based on the 1951 NRC,” Hazarika pointed out, “It simply requires the support of just 64 legislators of the State.” He added, “If there is no such land reservation policy for the locals, then no other legislation can save the rights and identity of the indigenous people.” Only when there is land, will the Assamese community survive; and only then will the language and security as well as identity of the community will remain intact.”
