Security beefed up for clash-ridden Tripura town

Agartala, May 28: In the wake of clash between the BJP (the ruling disposition) and the CPI (M) where three CPI (M) leaders including MLA Sudhan Das sustained injuries following attacks by a group of people, alleged to be the BJP supporters, on May 26, security arrangements have been beefed up in Belonia town and its adjoining areas.

According to reports, after the incident some miscreants pelted stone at the house of some CPI (M) supporters, spreading fear among the workers of the opposition. In both the incident, police registered cases but nobody has been arrested so far.

Tension has been prevailing in Belonia, the head quarter of South Tripura district, after the incidents.

A delegation of the Belonia Sub-divisional committee of the CPI (M) on Sunday met the Superintendent of Police JL Meena and expressed their concern over the incident.

Delegation led by district committee secretary Basudev Majumder told the SP that an abnormal situation had been prevailing in the town and the opposition political parties were not being allowed to discharge their normal activities.

SP Meena, after hearing the delegation, assured of providing additional security arrangement in and around the town. He reportedly told the delegation to inform the police if any such incident takes place in future. Belonia is considered a stronghold of the CPI (M). In the last election, the party retained 2 of the 3 constituencies of the sub-division though it lost the Belonia town constituency after a gap of 20 years.

Hrishyamukh constituency, under this sub-division, is represented by former finance minister Badal Choudhury. The other constituency in the sub-division Rajnagar is represented by Sudhan Das.
