SHILLONG, Sept 26: Security has been beefed up in West Shillong Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC), which has witnessed couple of unwanted pre-poll disturbances.
Following the twin incidents of petrol lobbing in the past 10 days, the police are not leaving anything to chance considering the sensitivity of the situation.
It may be reminded that on 22nd September a frontline supporter of Mohendro Rapsang, Congress candidate from the constituency, Mike Pakyntein was arrested based on his post in Facebook that allegedly read “RIP Paul Lyngdoh”.
Pakyntein was arrested for allegedly being involved in lobbing a petrol bomb at the residence of West Shillong constituency MLA Paul Lyngdoh around 5 am on 18th September.
Speaking to The Sentinel over phone, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Davis N Marak said, “We have beefed up security in West Shillong constituency and in a meeting with local dorbar shnong we have suggested installation of more CCTV cameras in the area.”
He informed this reporter that personnel from Lumdiengjri police station, along with Special Operation Team (SOT), have been deployed to patrol the area.
When asked on the FIR filed by Mohendro Rapsang, which stated that three miscreants destroyed the CCTV camera installed at the Congress office in Mawprem, the SP said, “One of the accused in the incident is still absconding and we had raided his house time and again, but he was not at his residence.”
He said family members of the accused had been summoned to the police station, but even they don’t know where he is.
According to the CCTV camera footage, three persons were allegedly involved in destroying the CCTV camera installed at the Congress office.
In this regard, Marak said, “We are yet to ascertain the identity of the other two people because their faces were covered. However, the one whose face was not covered is currently at large.”
He added, “Once we are able to locate the accused, who is still absconding, then only we will be able to ascertain the identity of the other two persons whose faces were captures in the CCTV camera.”
