Hailakandi: The district administration has made strict security arrangements across the district for smooth conduct of Id-uz-Zuha prayers at various idgahs and masjids on Wednesday.

Police and para military personnel will be deployed in strength to thwart any attempt by anti-social elements to disturb peace. In an order issued by District Magistrate, Adil Khan, four executive magistrates viz., Tridip Roy, Madhumita Nath, Ruth Lienthang and James Aind have been detailed for maintenance of law and order in Hailakandi, Lala, Algapur and Katlicherra circle areas respectively.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Amalendu Roy will be the overall incharge of law and order duty, the order states. Deputy Commissioner, Khan, in a message, greeted the people of Hailakandi district, saying it is an occasion to remind ourselves of the path of selfless sacrifice and forgiveness. “May this festival spread peace and harmony among all communities and bring prosperity to all,” said Khan in his message. Id-uz-Zuha is celebrated on the 10th day of Zilhaj, the 12th month of the Hijri calendar. It is a celebration of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to even sacrifice his son Ismail on Allah’s command and Prophet Ismail’s willingness to bow down to Allah’s command with patience.

Friday witnessed a large rush in markets in Hailakandi town, Panchgram and other parts of the district with people rushing to buy new clothes and accessories for the festival. “Since the festival is associated with sacrifice, people generally spend much on sacrificial animals,” said Salim Barbhuiya, a businessman, who had come to buy an animal at the biggest animal market at Panchgram. Celebrating the festival, Muslims will don new clothes and sacrifice goat and other animals. The meat is then distributed to family members, neighbours and the poor.
