Seeded players facing tough times

GUWAHATI,Oct 11:  Seeded players are having a tough times maintaining their superiority and top billing in the ongoing GTC Classic Chess 2016 at Gauhati Town Club here.

Bhabisnhu Pranti Bordoloi of Gauhati Town club Chess Foundation caused a major upset in the 6th round when he defeated Cheniram Pegu of Dibrugarh. In the previous round Bhabisnu was able to hold much higher seed Alok Barman of Cachar. In the 8th round Bhabishnu again drew with 22nd Seed Prab Kumar th of Guwahati.

While Current State Under-11 Champion Dhrupad Kashyap of Gauhati Town Club Chess Foundation defeated 5th Seed I Sajoba of Manipur in the 8th rounds and took his tally to 5.5 points after the 8th round.

Another Youngster Arubh Gohain put the last il on the coffin for Defending champion Trailokya nda in the 5th round when he totally outplayed nda who is now languishing on 5.5 points after 8 rounds. Trailokya had earlier suffered shock draws in round 3 and 4 against much lower seeded players.

On the other hand current tiol Under 9 Champion Shahil Dey, seeded 20th in this tourment has sent out a loud message to the senior players of the region that age is not a factor in chess by holding 3rd Seed Bhogen Singh of Manipur in the 8th round. Interestingly the age gap between the two is about 38 years! Shahil currently shares the 3rd position with 5 other players on 6.5 points after completion of 9 rounds.
