Semir on laws related to child adoption held

MANGALDAI, June 30: The District Legal Service Authority, Darrang, in association with premier social organization Crystal Vision, organized a thought-provoking semir on the topic ‘Law on adoption and its modalities there of’ here recently.

Participating in the programme held at the conference hall of GNM Training School, Mangaldai, Dr Radhika Devi, senior academician and chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Darrang, as one resource person said that adoption meant the process through which the adopted child became the lawful child of his adoptive parents with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities that are attached to a biological child. She discussed how a person or persons could be eligible to adopt a child under the provisions of the Act or regarding a child eligible for adoption.

“Any orphan or abandoned or surrendered child, is not free from adoption until and unless CWC declares it eligible for adoption,” she added. She also discussed the new methods of application for adoption and the role of different government agencies responsible for granting permission for adoption including Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) and Specialized Adoption Agency (SAA) among others.

On the other hand, prominent lawyer of Mangaldai Court, Lutfur Rahman, as another resource person, spoke on the different relevant aspects of the Hindu Adoptions and Maintence Act, 1956 and also gave replies to different queries raised by the participants. The meeting was also addressed by Kaklata Barua, Child Protection Officer, Non-formal care, Darrang as the invited speaker. The meeting concluded with the vote of thanks by Principal of GNM Training School, Swar Lata Kalita. The programme began with a song of Parvati Prasad Barua presented by Boho Barua - a student of the training institute. The meeting was participated by nursing students, academicians, members of NGOs, advocates, media persons among others and it was iugurated by Officiating Joint Director of Health Services, Darrang,   Dr Ramesh Ch Goswami.
