Senior citizens demand immediate repair of Silchar roads

SILCHAR, July 26: PWD Roads in Silchar town need immediate repair. Citing the example of deplorable condition of 250 metre long patch of Chittaranjan Avenue near Deshabandhu Cittaranjan Das statue and tiol highway daily market, leading senior citizens, A K Das, retired IAS officer, Prof. Dilip Kumar Dey, former principal, Government Teachers’ Training College, Purnendu Shekhar Bhattacharjee, former Registrar of Assam University, Mihir Kar Purkayastha and Niharendu Purkayastha, chairman and  vice-chairman, Proactive Senior Citizens’ Forum respectively, K K Choudhury, retired assistant commandant of BSF, Jyotirmoy Das Choudhury, ex principal, DIET, Jamini Mohan th, formerly attached with military engineering service, signed a joint memorandum which was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, on Monday, seeking his immediate intervention by exercising magisterial power to compel the Guwahati based road contractor to complete the repair work started in March last.

The so-called tiol Highway bye pass remed later as Chittaranjan Avenue, facilitates diversion of all heavy vehicles to minimize congestion of traffic on the old roads in the heart of Silchar town. But, the ill-equipped PWD contractor failed to complete repairing of a small part of Chittaranjan Avenue in five months. He rather kept piles of construction materials, causing water-logging and creating great hardship to commuters especially school going children, women and old people, they pointed out. The senior citizens apprehended outburst of people’s anguish which was mentioned in the memorandum.  “If no action is taken by the PWD (R), the situation may go out of control and the senior citizens of the area will in no way be held responsible for it.” On behalf of the sigtories, Prof. Dilip Kumar Dey and Niharendu Purkayastha met the Deputy Commissioner who gave a patient hearing to them and assured positive action. Similar memorandum was submitted to the Executive Engineer of PWD (R) concerned with copy endorsed to the Minister of PWD, Parimal Shuklabaidya.
