Senior cop injured in GNLA ambush

SHILLONG, May 9: An Additiol Superintendent of Police (ASP) was injured in an ambush by GNLA militants in North Garo Hills district today. The incident took place at Thapagatok village of North Garo Hills district.  According to the North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramesh Singh, the police team led by ASP RTG Momin came under attack while they were returning from an unsuccessful raid carried out at the residence of GNLA area commander Rakbran D Shira alias Philiport.  Singh said the police team got a specific tip-off about the presence of the GNLA area commander and his comrades at the residence. However, the area commander and others fled before the police raid. However, the militants regrouped and laid the ambush by firing indiscrimitely at the four police vehicles at around 11 a.m. There was a heavy exchange of fire between the police team and the militants and in course of the firing, a bullet hit the upper thigh of the ASP. Additiol reinforcement were dispatched to the area, but the militants - suspected to be around 8-9 - escaped to the nearby forest. According to the SP of North Garo Hills, Momin was rushed to Guwahati for advanced medical treatment and as per the latest reports, the condition of the injured police officer is said to be stable.
