Sensation prevails in Hojai, irate mob attacks security personnel

GAON (HAIBORGAON), June 27: Sensation prevailed in entire Hojai town on Monday night and it continued on Tuesday for which the district administration filly was bound to declare the entire Hojai town under section 144 following a trifle incident in which two youths of a community teased a girl of another community at a restaurant situated at Hojai old market when the girl was taking scks. Four persons have been arrested in this connection.
An irate mob went on a rampage on Monday and blocked the main road of Hojai town for hours and when the local police tried to control the situation, a group of anti-social elements attacked police personnel with stones and as retaliation, the police also launched baton charge and threw tear gas to disperse the mob. As a consequence, in the incident four security personnel, including a Sub-Inspector, a CRPF jawan and two PSOs of SP, Hojai sustained severe injury.
The police sources on Tuesday said that soon after the trifle incident, local police led by Sub-Inspector  Hiteswar Kalita rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by assuring the supporters of the girl to arrest all those accused and sent them back home. But amidst the settlement between police and the girl’s supporters, a group of anti-social elements tried to give it a commul colour and blocked the main road of Hojai town for hours. Hojai Police led by SI Kalita tried to make them understand the entire issue, but the irate mob ignored his words and went on a rampage and attacked the police and security personnel with stones for which SI Kalita was severely injured.
Hojai Superintendent of Police, Devajyoti Mukharjee along with one ADC rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. But the mob out of rage once again started to attack them with stones and as a result another three security personnel, including two PSOs of the Hojai SP, Tapan Suklabaidya, Pramud Gayan and a CRPF jawan Ranjit Sing sustained injury. The police as well as the district administration filly finding no way, launched baton charge and triggered tear gas targeting the irate agitators to disperse them and brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, Hojai Deputy Commissioner S Lakhsan rushed to the spot and reviewed the entire incident, the sources added further.
On the other hand, on Tuesday till filing of this report, Hojai Police on the basis of CCTV footage arrested four persons in connection with the incident. They have been identified as Farip Hussain, Sabir Hussain, Mubarak Ali and another one person who allegedly teased the girl in the restaurant, added the sources.
The sources further said that if no further incident took place in nearby areas of Hojai, then the declared Section 144 might be relaxed by evening.
