Separate State a legitimate right: GHSMC

SHILLONG, August 31: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) on Monday, categorically stated that the demand for a separate Garo State is a legitimate political right of the Garo people.

Claiming to have the support of the Nokmas, Laskars, Church leaders, NGOs and student unions, the chairman of the committee Nikman Ch. Marak highlighted the history of the Garo’s in support of the Garoland Movement.

He said, “The Garos are one of the origil settlers of the Northeast. They settled not only in the present day Meghalaya but in entire Northeast and West Bengal including Bangladesh, apart from relating to anls that goes down to the Mughal and Ahom rule.

The goal is to get separate State for Garo Hills through democratic means.

The major Reorganization of Indian State was carried out by the recommendation of State Reorganization Commission 1965. The board principles, on which the reorganization was executed were on the basis of language and culture of an area, fincial, economy and administrative inconveniences.
