'Set police accountability in crime against women'

New Delhi, November 10: Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Tuesday urged Lt.Governor jeeb Jung to set up accountability mechanism for Delhi Police in cases related to crimes against women. Maliwal attended first-ever coordition committee meeting with the Lt. Governor and Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Tuesday. “In 2014, only nine convictions were made for crime against women and of the 11,500 First Information Reports, charge sheet was filed only in 3,500 cases. We requested the LG to set the accountability of Delhi Police in such cases,” the Delhi Commission for Women chief told media after the meeting. “LG in the meeting assured us to extend full support and share records of all such cases with DCW,” Maliwal said. During the 45-minute meeting at Raj Niwas, Maliwal said the crime graph in the tiol capital should be lowered to ensure women feel safe. Against the 4,000 complaints received via Delhi Police’s Himmat app, only 13 FIRs were registered, she said. “We demanded to hold this meeting at least twice a month so that there is a coordited response in Delhi on rape cases. It is important to make a collective push to stop crime against women.” She also laid stress on a strong vigil at the city’s largest red-light area of GB Road.  (IANS)
