Seuj Konwar remembered on death anniversary

SIVASAGAR, June 22: Amid mellifluous songs and captivating dance and orchestral performances, Sivasagar paid tribute to Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha on his 17th death anniversary on Tuesday evening. The event was organized jointly by Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha Smriti Rakhya Samiti and Sibsagar tya Samaj at Sibsagar tya Mandir.

The event began with the lighting of the lamp followed by floral tributes at the portrait of the great writer, poet, orator, litterateur, lyricist, dramatist, composer, sportsman and leader of the masses by wife of Parag Chaliha, Dipali Chaliha, Xatradhikar Lakhi Kanta Mahanta, Sibsagar Bar Association president Ajit Borpujari and other dignitaries.

Speaking on the occasion, Dipali Chaliha said that Parag Chaliha, who had immense contribution in every field, had also put his tireless effort to make the young generation valuable human resource. It was followed by a colourful cultural programme featuring musical compositions of the Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha.

Sixteen advocates of Sibsagar Bar Association paid their respect to the multi-faceted persolity with a presentation of chorus, an evergreen composition of Seuj Konwar, Rongpurore Rongmon. Students of Kala Vihar Sangeet Vidyalay also paid their homage to the cultural icon by dancing to the tunes oh Seuj Konwar’s composition Puhor Bichari Jau. As a mark of respect, scenes of Usha-Aniruddha from Seuj Konwar’s immortal creation Chari Hezar Bosoror Asom also captivated the house-packed audience.

On the occasion, six poor but meritorious students Dipandita Kurmi, Maini Koch, Sobha Chaotal, Ritupar Bora, Rubi Hazowari, and Param Gogoi, who passed the recent HSLC and HS examitions with flying colours, were honoured with Parag Chaliha Memorial Scholarship Award that include cash and a certificate. Similarly, winners of the essay competition which was held in two categories, mely Dipankar Bhuyan of Sankardev Sishu Vidya Niketan and Sabm Tahira Ullah of Sibsagar Junior College, were awarded with first and second prize in Group-A, while Shilpika Rajguru of Sibsagar Girls’ College and Priyanki Bora of Sibsagar Girls’ College were awarded with first and second prize in Group-B, respectively.

 The entire programme was anchored by Parag Chaliha’s younger son Saurav Chaliha (Liku).
