Seven Wild Jumbos Die of Electrocution in Odisha

In a very tragic incident, a total of seven elephants lost its lives on being electrocuted near Kamalanga village in Dhenkanal, Odisha. Notably, this particular area notices large movements of elephants and this incident of the elephants, that died after coming in contact with sagging live electric wire is shocking and saddening. The incident took place on late Friday night.

Sudarshan Panda, Additional Principal Conservator of Forest, told the media, “We have received information about the death of seven elephants due to electrocution. Field officials are rushing to the spot to ascertain the circumstances under which the tragic incident had occurred.”

As per the information provided by the forest department, a herd of 13 elephants was passing through the area. Seven of them got electrocuted by the live wires and six others could escape the accident somehow. The bodies of the dead elephants were later found lying near a small water channel passing through vast stretches of agricultural land.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that the power line was being set up as part of laying of a new railway line.
