Seventy Organizations of Assam to Stage Fast-Unto-death in New Delhi from December 9

GUWAHATI: As many as seventy organizations of Assam are going to stage an indefinite fast-unto-death agitation in New Delhi from December 9, 2018, in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The fast is set to cast a shadow over the Winter Session of Parliament, beginning from December 11.

The hunger strike, according to the organizations, may continue for 15-20 days with at least 50 people on fast daily. The organizations will have backup teams ready every day to replace anyone falling ill during the fast.

In Assam, these 70 organizations staged a number of agitations against the Bill. This is their first such agitation against the Bill at the national capital.

The organizations say that the Bill is a threat to Assam as it, if passed, is going to spell disaster for the identity of the indigenous people of Assam. They said that the BJP is misleading the people of Assam on the would-be impact of the Bill on them. This apart, the Bill, according to the organizations, is set to violate the Assam Accord.

Some of the organizations going to stage the hunger strike at the national capital are the AJYCP, All Assam Tai Ahom Students’ Union, All Moran Students’ Union, All Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad etc.
