Sharmila sent to judicial custody

IMPHAL, February 7: Irom Sharmila who has been on fast unto death since November 4, 2000 was remanded today in judicial custody till February 21 by the chief judicial magistrate, Imphal West before whom she was produced.

Recently, she was acquitted of the charge of attempting to commit suicide.

However, police had rearrested on the same charge since she continued her fast even after being released. The chief judicial magistrate will shortly give his ruling. In the past, the court held that the prosecution had failed to prove that she is trying to commit suicide.

She is demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Posers) Act, 1958.
