'SHGs play important role in rural economy'

Donkamukam, March 18: “Women of the rural areas play a vital role by forming SHGs which play an important role in the rural economy,” said Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) CEM Tuliram Ronghang while attending as the chief guest at the 2nd annual general body meeting of the Amlong Sarpo Cluster-level Federation-cum-iuguration of  Ajeevika Grameen Express Jivika Yoj ( AGEJY) at Artukekang near Donkamukam and Karbi Langpi Cluster Level Federation (CLF) annual general body meeting of Block Mission Magement Unit (BMMU) of Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission at Satgaon, both under Rongkhang Development Block in West Karbi Anglong.

“The government cannot afford to provide jobs and contract work to every individual or to a group, so through SHG, self-employment can be generated and also infrastructure development will take place,” the CEM further said.

He in the meeting also urged the bank officers who were present to impart skill development training activities to the SHGs. “The present government, both at the Centre and the State, is interested in providing special fincial assistance to SHGs in two different instalments -first Rs 15,000and then Rs 10,000,” the CEM further said. He also requested the bank authorities who were present to provide loans to the best performing SHGs at zero per cent interest.

“Not only for SHGs but for farmers too schemes have been launched by the government and soon tractors will be given to every revenue village,” the CEM said. In the programme, MLA Scholarship Scheme cheques to meritorious students were also distributed to 39 students.
