Shillong Chamber Choir to perform for a global cause

SHILLONG, Nov 18: The Shillong Chamber Choir will be performing at the Global Citizen Festival on November 19 at an annual event which brings together musicians, world leaders and change-makers.

The iugural Global Citizen Festival India will see participation from intertiol as well as Indian celebrities with big mes such as Jay Z, Demi Lovato, AR Rahman, Amitabh Bachchan, Fredia Pinto, Aamir khan, Karee Kapoor Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, popular British boy band- The Vamps and more. The world famous British rock band Coldplay will also perform.

It may be recalled that the Shillong Chamber Choir (SCC) is a multi-genre Indian chamber choir based in Shillong which won the reality TV show India’s Got Talent in 2010. The Choir Founded by Neil Nongkynrih, a concert pianist as their conductor in 2001, is a recipient of the Padma Shri Award 2015 and presently the sole representative of India as a member of the World Choir Council, Germany. The Choir is a musical ambassador of the North East in particular and India in general to the world.

They were also awarded three gold awards at the 6th World Choir Games for Musica Sacra, Gospel and Popular Music held at Shaoxing Chi (Shanghai) in July 2010. The Choir has 25 members including 15 singers, and other musicians and soloist, apart from conductor Nongkynrih. The choir’s repertoire includes works of western classical music, including Handel, Bach, Gershwin and Mozart, from hits by rock group Queen, and Khasi folk songs and opera.

Over the years they have performed in Britain, Poland, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Italy and the Indian cities of Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai and Guwahati. They also performed at the Rashtrapati Bhavan for visiting US president Barack Obama and Michelle Obama during their state visit to India.

At the Global Citizen India stage, SCC and ECO will be collaborating for of a song composed and arranged by Neil Nongkynrih blending Khasi folkfore, western classical sounds and Amitabh Bacchan singing about the awareness about the respect that women deserve in today’s world.
