Shillong continues to witness massive protests

SHILLONG, March 28: The demand to use the existing stringent laws against the murderers cum rapist was the ardent call of the people in the state. Amidst the tardy investigation carried out by the Police on the alleged cruel murder and rape of a 19 years old girl in 4th Mile Upper Shillong. Women folks vociferously raised their voices on Monday.

President of the Seng Long Kmei (Women organisation) 4th Mile Upper Shillong, N Kharkongor, during a candlelight vigil at Laban, Iewdak organized by the UDP Laban and Mawprem unit, requested the State government to bring stronger laws to safeguard the women population in the state besides demanding the accused Vicky Syiem to be awarded with the death sentence for brutally raping and murdering 19-year-old Shailinia Kharrymba.

Speaking in the candlelight vigil Kharkongor, said, “We want to urge the state government to bring stronger legislation to protect the rights of women in the state and to award the accused with the death sentence for the crime he had committed.”

She also appealed to the youth of the state not to let devilish thoughts enter their minds in order to eradicate such things from ever happening again in our society.

She felt that the state government should also help the family of the victim in whichever way they can.

Meanwhile, Hamlet Dohling president, UDP Mylliem Constituency said, “The police should punish the accused and extract more information from him if there are more people involved in the crime.”
