Shillong Muslims show solidarity with Rohingyas

From A Correspondent

Shillong, Sept 15: The Muslim community of the State Capital took out a silent protest march against the atrocities and persecution of Rohingyas in Myanmar here on Friday.

The silent protest march started from Mawbah point of the city and headed towards Rhino Point, Civil Hospital junction, IGP and went back towards Mawbah.

It may be mentioned that last week New Delhi had stated that it wants to deport all Rohingya refugees who have left Myanmar in previous years.

Some 40,000 Rohingyas have settled in India and 16,000 of them have received refugee documentation even as violence against the ethnic minority escalated in the western region of Rakhine in Myanmar in response to the growing insurgency.

Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles, which guards the Indo-Myanmar border in the North-eastern region, said on Friday that its personnel are on a high alert due to apprehension of immigrant Rohingyas trying to enter the region by crossing the intertiol border illegally.

Patrolling all along Indo-Myanmar border has been intensified over the last three days, the country’s oldest paramilitary force said. However, the Assam Rifles clarified that till Friday no illegal immigrant has been detected or intercepted. High priority is being given to the border town of Moreh in Manipur and in south Mizoram, it added.
