SHILLONG, Dec 25: Midnight services by churches of various Christian denomitions marked the advent of Christmas in Shillong and the entire state of Meghalaya while the joyful services and visits to the dear and near ones was the highlight of the day’s celebration.

The sermons from the different altars of the Churches once again rekindled the followers of Christianity about the teachings of Jesus Christ who dwelt upon peace and brotherhood. This thrusting message from the Church elders who addressed the faithful assume significance in view of the type of violent turmoil’s which has plaque certain parts of the State in the recent past.

“The basic principle of Christianity not simply relates to peace, love and brotherhood but to desist from all unwanted acts,” said a Church elder while pointing at the hatred, killings, corruptions and selfishness in every format in the State.

“Let us try to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ to make Shillong, Meghalaya and the world a better place to live in,” stated another octogerian after coming out of the Church on Friday.

For the Christians, tip toeing from one house to the other to share the spirit of Christmas with cakes, candies and family feast is the order of the day to mark the birth of Christ.

Amidst the solemnity of the celebrations, joyous tourists coming from all over had a journey to every visiting spots in and around the city. Although, it was a shocker to some of them who thought that Christmas is celebrated with frolicking scene and activities in the streets of Shillong on the eventual day. But as always, Christmas from a local denizen to a tourist is as good as the spirit itself.
