Shillong streets get makeover ahead of Puja

SHILLONG, Sept 23: The Meghalaya Public Works Department (PWD) has started a ‘cosmetic exercise’ to give a facelift to the city roads ahead of the Durga Puja.
The PWD has started to repair the dilapidated roads as well the craters in full swing, giving a makeover to the streets.
Interestingly, one of the stretches that are being repaired by the department concerned for the second time, which was repaired five months ago, is located within the periphery of the official residence of the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
The PWD officials said that the bad road conditions in the State were a result of heavy monsoon.
“How a road that was repaired six months ago is again in a dilapidated condition? It lacks sincere monitoring by the authorities concerned. Although some cosmetic works are being carried out ahead of the Puja, we are well aware how actually the Public Works Department functions,” said a resident of the city.
He said any fresh rains will again create similar type of potholes due to unscientific repair works in most part of the city.
With the type of pathetic roads leading to some prominent tourist sites outside the city, a bad picture is expected to be paint by tourists who are likely to throng the city during the Puja.
The last stretch of Dawki road along the Indo-Bangladesh border, the Mawphalang- Mawsynram road and the Mawphlang-Jakrem road are some such reads.
Although some repair works are being carried out to impress the visitors, the locals are doubtful about quality of the repair works being carried out by PWD.
