Shillong, January 1: Shillong Midnight Festival held at Kyndailad in the heart of the city gave a befitting treat to the New Year revelers and tourists in the city. The festival that kick started at around 8 p.m. culmited at around 4 a.m. on Thursday morning with rock and roll groups, rappers, the traditiol drummers and DJs entertaining the 10,000–odd crowd for nearly eight hours.

The festive mood to welcome 2015 was evident as people started to throng the place from 7 pm to jointly bid farewell to 2014 and welcome the New Year.

“The crowd participation in the countdown and the shrieks made at the stroke of midnight was awesome,” stated a tourist who was part of the New Year bash. Another tourist said the New Year carnival in Shillong resembles Goa. “The difference is we don’t need to pay to enjoy such a bash here”.

Heavy elaborate arrangements made by the city police also helped in making the revelry free from mischief mongers. It is learnt that the organizers were compelled to wind up after repeated pleas from the district administration.

Meanwhile, the Mait Shaphrang Movement (MSM) welcomed the New Year with a midnight swim at Crinoline swimming pool. This is the 18th year that the MSM has organised the midnight dip. Seventy blocks of ice weighing 40 kgs each were dumped into the pool a day before the dip to reduce the water temperature in the pool. Braving the cold weather, 25 of them jumped into the pool as soon as the siren to mark the herald of the new year was sounded.
